What Gua Sha Does

With an origin from the 2nd century, and compared to the contemporary gastron technique, Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool. Typically made of jade, horn, and other materials, and some are even made out of metal too. The word “gua” means “scrape” and “sha” refers to the scrape of the redness or petechiae, the small, red dots that appear on the skin as a result of the scraping. Gua Sha is often used on the back, neck, shoulders, and other areas of the body.

Various types of people incorporate Gua Sha into their lives from casual everyday people wanting it in their skincare routine to even bodybuilders looking to alleviate scar tissue and the like.

The Purpose of Gua Sha

The main goals of Gua Sha are to promote blood circulation, release stagnation, and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that when there is stagnation of blood or blockage of qi (vital energy) in the body, it can lead to pain, discomfort, and various health issues. By scraping the skin, Gua Sha is thought to break up stagnation, improve circulation, and encourage the flow of energy.

The process involves applying a lubricating oil to the skin and then using the smooth-edged tool to apply pressure and then scrape the skin in long, firm strokes on the designated area. This scraping action can cause small blood vessels near the surface of the skin to rupture, resulting in the appearance of redness or petechiae. These marks usually fade within a few days.

Gua Sha is believed by its practitioners to have various potential benefits, including:

Pain Relief

Gua Sha is often used to alleviate musculoskeletal pain and tension. It’s believed that by promoting circulation and releasing stagnation, it can help reduce pain and discomfort.

Detoxification

Traditional Chinese medicine suggests that Gua Sha can help the body eliminate toxins and waste products by improving circulation and lymphatic drainage.

In the Lymphatic system, it carries, well, lymph. It is a collection of white blood cells amongst everything they would need to clean and patrol the blood as well as the whole body. When there is injury to the body or long-standing issues that the lymphatic system detects then there will be an excess of lymph. Therefore it could be drained to alleviate any discomfort or pain.

Immune Support

Some practitioners believe that Gua Sha can stimulate the immune system and promote overall health. Some think it as a vital way of stimulation which is very akin to massages and the benefits those would bring too

Stress Reduction

The process of Gua Sha can be relaxing, and some people find it helps reduce stress and anxiety.

Gua Sha

Skin Health

Gua Sha is also sometimes used on the face as part of beauty and skincare routines. It’s believed to improve blood flow to the skin, promote collagen production, and enhance the appearance of the skin.

Gua Sha has its Uses and Potential But it’s Best Used as Needed

It’s important to note that while many people find Gua Sha to be beneficial, its effectiveness and mechanisms are not fully understood or supported by scientific evidence. Some studies suggest that Gua Sha may indeed have certain physiological effects, such as increased blood flow and anti-inflammatory responses, but more research is needed to establish its specific benefits and mechanisms of action. If you’re considering trying Gua Sha, it’s advisable to consult with a qualified practitioner and discuss any potential risks or benefits based on your individual health needs.

Also to practice it correctly, there has been talk that using Gua Sha on the neck will make a much more prominent jaw line but that is just a rumor and should not be done to yourself.
